Channel-i Shera Kontho Talent Hunt

If you are facing a real hard time deciding on the ideal one amongst numerous talent hunt programmes on almost every channel, Channel-i Shera Kontho’ featuring Bangladeshi music divas Sabina Yasmin and Runa Laila as judges is probably the programme you are looking for.
This is the programme where unknown prodigy Shameem Hassan made the two judges emotional with his performance of ‘roilo’, directed by Hassan Abidur Reza Jewel and hosted by Farzana Brownia, brings forward performers of a very high calibre.
Channel-i announced the programme in March 8, 2008, and the registration process went under way from March 13 till March 31. Contestants from 15 to 27 years age could register through letters, telephone calls, SMS, and expatriates registered through the Channel-i website.
‘The turnout included lots of young excellent singers who too are immature to fight with elders, so we fixed an age limit and launched another musical talent hunt, Khudey Gaanbaj 2008, for them,’Faridur Reza Sagar, managing director of Channel-i.
With more than 80,000 participants including 17,000 contenders from outside Bangladesh, the audition rounds started on April 4 in Barisal. The primary auditions were also held at the six district towns of Rajshahi, Khulna, Dhaka, Sylhet and Chittagong along with a separate one for Dhaka Metro.
‘with two zones for Dhaka, one for foreign contestants and six for other six divisions, the primary auditions of the participators were held,’ says Jewel.
From the divisional audition rounds, which was the first round of the competition, expert judges elected ten power card winners from each zone that totalled 81 (there was one zone that selected 11) for the second round named ‘’Dhaka. The immigrants had to upload a music file, based on which the judges selected ten contestants. Subir Nandy, Abida Sultana, and Kanak Chapa were the judges in the ‘Joyjatra’ round.
This 81 were divided into five groups, consisting 16 in four and 17 in one group. Among the 81, total 51 contestants rolled to the third round called ‘Swapnodanay’legends Runa Laila and Sabina Yasmin took the finalists under their wing.
The 51 participants went on to the fourth round called ‘’and the remaining 30 qualified for the fifth round, ‘’a grooming session mentored by renowned singer Subir Nandy, which is still ongoing. SMS voting from the general viewer was started from the ‘Chhaya’The ‘Shamol Chhaya’leaving 19 for the next round. Currently the contest is down to the top 11 in the ongoing round called ‘Egaro Jon’gala where the Shera Kontho will be decided.
Sponsors of the show include Channel-i, Prothom Alo, Annex Communications, Radio Foorti and Sound Tech. ‘think they could easily survive in the competitive music industry through their quality,’ says singer Jewel, one of the show’s directors.
With the slogan of ‘Gane awaj tolo prane’ the show is aired every Tuesday and Friday at 7:50 pm in Channel-i. The final took place on August 29 and the winning contestants were rewarded with album contracts, two each for the top two.
