Shuvo, The first “South Asian Super Star”

A Bangladeshi wins the first title of South Asian Superstar. Shuvo won the title “South Asian Superstar.”  Niloy, who is also from Bangladesh, secured the sixth position in the competition.

South Asian Star is a brainchild of a Bengali News Tv Channel, Taranewz and incorporates participants from Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan. The objective is to promote our musical cultures in the international arena.

More important than a talent competition, this show focuses on music tearing down barriers of language, bridging often contentious cultures with the universal message of song. This brother and sisterhood of music is a powerful tool that’s needed now more than ever in today’s sensitive relationship between global neighbors.

TV Southasia was founded on a similar premise; it is a collaborative channel, bringing together television stations from diverse South Asian nations and cultures in order to share common viewpoints.

During the first phase of ‘South Asian Star’, the singing contest took place in many south asian countries to select two representatives from each country. Ten contestants (two from each country) from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan are competing for the top spot.

Popular Bangladeshi singer Agun was among the judges. Other members of the panel were Najam Sheraz (Pakistan), Dr. Dilip Gabadamu Dali (Sri Lanka), Raju Singh (Nepal), Sarang Dev (India) and noted Indian artiste Usha Uthup (guest judge).

Organised by TV South Asia, musical talent hunt titled “South Asian Superstar” began in December 2008 in Kolkata. The show was aired on Rtv (Bangladesh), Image Channel (Nepal), MTV (Sri Lanka), and Aaj TV (Pakistan). First of the final two episodes (pre-taped) of the show will be aired tonight at 11 pm.
