The two-day ‘Baul Shah Abdul Karim Loko Utshab’ ended at the home village of the living legend yesterday afternoon. Banglalink honoured Karim at the concluding programme. A similar event was organised to honour the eminent artiste last year as well.
Inaugurating the two-day fest at Ujandhol village on Friday afternoon, local lawmaker Suranjit Sengupta said, “Shah Abdul Karim devoted his life and works to inspire the common folk. These are national assets. We have to preserve and uphold his creations. A Shah Abdul Karim Academy would be set up here ahead of the folk festival next year.”
Although the inaugural function did not draw much audience, people thronged the venue in the evening as Bauls joined the cultural session.
Mosharraf Hossain chaired a discussion on the occasion. Additional Divisional Commissioner, Fazlur Rahman; Derai upazila Vice-chairman Chhabi Chowdhury and UNO Abdur Rahim also attended the discussion.
The nonagenarian composer and singer of many popular songs has been suffering from age related ailments for years. The bard stays at his cottage in the remote village under Derai upazila of Sunamganj. Many Baul singers of the region are his disciples.
Former lawmaker Nasiruddin Ahmed Chowdhury joined the musical programme in the evening. Singers Abdur Rahman Bayati, Maqsud, Jewel, Latif Sarker along with over a hundred Bauls performed well into the night before a sizeable audience.
Karim was honoured with an Ekushey Padak in 2001. Every year, a large number of bauls from different parts of Bangladesh and even from India gather here to perform Shah Karim’s songs and pay tribute to him.
