Instrumental and ghazal by Akhil Kumar Das

An evening of Indian classical music on guitar by Neel Ranjan Mukherjee and renditions of ghazal by Akhil Kumar Das was held at the Conference Lounge of National Press Club on January 4. National Press Club was the organiser of the programme. Both artistes (from India) held the audience’s interest through their performances.

General Secretary of Press Club, Kamal Uddin Sabuj, welcomed the artistes, while Acting President of the Club, Syed Akhtar Yousuf, gave a brief speech.

The musical programme started with a performance by Neel Ranjan. The artiste (from the reputed ‘Seniya Gharana’ of New Delhi) with a seven-string Hawaiian guitar performed a raaga and a raaga based composition. His first performance was ‘Raaga Maru Bihag’. The latter rendition by the young musician was a dhun based on ‘Raaga Mishra Khamaj’.

At present, Neel Ranjan runs a musical troupe in India, called Sky Group.

After Neel Ranjan, Akhil Kumar Das took the stage. A vocalist of the ‘Indore Gharana’, Das performed several songs made famous by the legendary ghazal singers Mehdi Hassan and Ghulam Ali. Das started with a Mehdi Hassan number “Duniya Kisi Ke Pyar Mein”. Das’ other Mehdi Hassan covers were “Rafta Rafta Ho Meri” and “Zindagi Mein tho Sabhi”.

The singer’s cover of Ghulam Ali ghazal included “Chupkey Chupkey”, “Hangama” and “Ye Dil”.

Both artistes were accompanied by Biplab Sharma on tabla, Firoz Khan on sitar, Nurul Haque on santoor and mandolin and Sandip Das on harmonium.

Rawnak Hasan, cultural secretary of Press Club, was the anchor of the programme
