Kabir Suman solo concert in Dhaka

Widely popular in both West Bengal and Bangladesh, artiste Kabir Suman will stage a solo concert in Dhaka on October 16. The announcement was made at a press conference held by Chirkut Bangladesh, the organiser, at a venue in New Eskaton on October 13. Kabir Suman and Mir Arif Billah, managing partner of Chirkut Bangladesh were present at the conference.

Initially the concert was supposed to be held at National Theatre Hall, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA). But the organisers have decided to change the venue. The concert will be held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium on October 16.

“We have been trying to organise Suman’s concert for the last six months. Though we wanted to hold the concert at National Theatre Hall, we had to change the venue, as there were some objections and protests against it,” said Mir Arif Billah.

Suman first performed in Dhaka in 1996. The concert was organised by the Liberation War Museum. Suman came back for another performance in 1998. His solo album “Tomakey Chai” was a huge hit in India and Bangladesh. It should be mentioned that the artiste has performed in Dhaka on more than one occasion at fundraising events.

“I’m deeply attached to this country. The bond I have with Bangladesh is thicker than blood. My father worked at the then Dacca Betar (radio) during the British Raj. I have many memories of 1971. Bangladeshi artistes have been frequently performing in Kolkata. So, a cordial relationship has blossomed between the two communities of artistes,” said Suman.

Since May 2009, Suman is a member of the Indian parliament in the 15th Lok Sabha, having been elected from the Jadavpur constituency in Kolkata on a Trinamool Congress ticket.

“I’m here as a singer, not a politician,” the artiste smilingly said.
