Farida Parveen at Praner Khela

Farida Parveen at Praner Khela

The latest instalment of Bengal Foundation’s musical soiree “Praner Khela” was held on January 28 at Bengal Gallery, Dhanmondi. Renowned Lalon singer Farida Parveen and flutist Gazi Abdul Hakim performed in the evening. ‘Lalon Konya’ famed Parveen was the main artiste of the evening, as her soulful rendition of popular Lalon numbers captivated the audience for nearly three hours.

Parveen is widely credited to have taken Lalon’s lyrics beyond our borders. In 2008, Parveen won the ‘Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize,’ a prestigious Japanese award for upholding traditional music in Asia .

Although, Parveen has become synonymous with ‘Lalon Geeti,’ she is also an accomplished adhunik singer. Parveen rendered several adhunik numbers at the programme. She started her performance with a rendition of a patriotic song “O Pakhi Rey Aye Dekhey Ja,” a homage to the Freedom Fighters.

She also sang several other compositions, including “Ei Padma, Ei Meghna”, “Ekbaree Kadiyachhilam”, “Nindar Katha Jodi Na Bidhilo Gaye”, (for which she won a National Award) and her hugely popular number “Tomra Bhuley Gechho Mallikadi’r Naam”.

Before Parveen moved on to Lalon’s songs, Hakim took the stage and performed a couple of ‘raagas’ including ‘Ragaa Desh’ and ‘Ragaa Bhairavi’. Accompanied by the able playing of tabla, each performance of Hakim lasted for nearly 10 minutes.

Throughout the programme, Hakim accompanied Parveen on the flute as well. The other instrumentalists of the evening were– SM Reza Babu on dhol and percussion, Delwar Hossain on dotara and mandolin and Daulatur Rahman on keyboard.

After Hakim’s classical music treat, Parveen took the audience on a journey to the mystical world of Lalon, as she rendered songs from the bard’s collection.

“Manush Guru Nistha Jar,” was her first rendition of Lalon’s songs. She went on to sing “Khomo, Khomo Oporadh”, “Shatya Bol Shupathey Chal”, “Jeikhaney Shai’r Baramkhana”, “Parey Loye Jao Amay” and “Tin Pagoley Holo Mela”.

The evening featured most of Lalon’s popular numbers. It is noteworthy that Bengal Foundation has released an album of Lalon Geeti featuring Parveen. The album is titled “Shomoy Geley Shadhon Hobey Na”.

A wonderful interplay of Parveen’s vocals and Gazi Abdul Hakim’s flute throughout the evening caused a musical high for the audience.

“Praner Khela” is Bengal Foundation’s regular musical programme, which is sponsored by Eastern Bank Limited
