The nation observed “Amar Ekushey” with much enthusiasm and fanfare yesterday. Special programmes were held across the city to observe the day - one of the most significant events in the history of Bangladesh .
It’s the eve of Ekushey. A little before midnight a large crowd gathers in front of Shaheed Minar, forming serpentine queues to place wreaths and flowers on the monument. On their lips is the famous song “Amar Bhai-er Roktey Rangano Ekushey February”. And before you know it the clock strikes 12:00, heralding in Ekushey (21) February.
Among the cultural organisations, Padatik Natya Shangshad, Bangladesh held a daylong event — ‘Ekushey Padatik Dadash Shangskritik Shommelon and Bhasha Shainik Shangbardhona’, at Ramna Batomul to mark the day. “The sacrifices of Salam, Barkat, Rafiq and others have enabled us to utter the word ‘Ma’ today — one of the first words a human being learns to say. We will always be grateful to the martyrs and activists as they helped establish Bangla as our national language this very day, 58 years ago,” said Mehedi Pervez, an audience at Padatik’s programme.

Selim Shamsul Huda Chowdhury, chief executive, Padatik Natya Shangshad, Bangladesh; Hassan Arif, general secretary, Shammilito Shangskritik Jote; Laila Afroz and Syed Mahbubur Rahman, DMD, Brac Bank were present at the felicitation ceremony. Laila Afroz recited “Bangla Bhasha”, and Nargis Chowdhury rendered the song “Rakto Shopothey Amra Ajkey”, written by Tofazzal Hossain, in the course of the programme. The programme was sponsored by Brac Bank and GMG Airlines.
Apart from the award ceremony, the programme featured performances by cultural organisations such as Shur-er Dhara, Bonhi Shikha, Satyen Sen Shilpi Shangstha and Udichi. Leading singers of the country, Ferdous Ara, Bubul Moholanabish, Fakir Alamgir, Lili Islam, Sajed Akbar and others performed at the event.
