Bashonto Utsab in Sylhet

People from different walks of life in Sylhet enthusiastically made their way to the venue of the Bashonto Ananda Utsab, held to celebrate the first day of spring. The function attracted thousands of students who congregated at the Sylhet Sanskrit College premises, located on Subidbazar Road. Since early morning a serpentine queue began to form, with people waiting for their turn to join the daylong celebrations.
Human rights activist Sultana Kamal formally inaugurated the Utsab by hoisting the national flag and lighting a ‘mangal pradip’ at the Sanskrit College grounds in the morning. Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran was present as chief guest. Eminent cultural activist Hemchandra Bhattacharya and director of Mohanlal Sweets, Manilal Ghosh were the special guests. Bashonto Ananda Utsab Parishad organised the event, which continued till midnight.
After a brief discussion, artistes from different organisations staged a cultural programme. Youngsters displayed their talent with songs, dances and recitation. Eminent Rabindra Sangeet artiste Aditi Mohsin also performed at the function.
Artistes of organisations Anandalok, Sangeet Parishad, Jatiya Sangeet Parishad, Rabindra Sangeet Sammilan Parishad, Geeto Bitan, Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Shilpi Sangstha, Nazrul Charcha O Gobeshana Parishad, Charubak, Dwoita Swar, Udichi Sylhet, Arundhati, Nilom Loka Sangeetaloy, Nrityashoilee, Nrityakala Kendra, Academy for Manipuri Culture and Arts, Shilpangan, Nriyasram, Rashik Lal Loko Academy and Ananda Sangeet Niketan demonstrated their creative skills. A photo exhibition and a drawing competition also drew crowds, while several stalls dotted the venue.
