Baul singer Abdul Hamid is a rising star. A regular performer of Baul songs in Jhenidah and neighbouring districts, he unfailingly mesmerises the audience. Today he is a reputed Baul singer in Jhenidah.
Abdul Hamid was born in Harinakundo village in Jhenidah district. His father Sabed Ali is a government employee. Sabed Ali is very fond of Lalon songs. Only naturally, Hamid was inspired by Lalon songs right from his childhood.
Hamid completed his primary education in 1996 and passed the SSC exams in 2002. Since then he has immersed himself in Lalon’s ideology and songs. Later, he learnt Lalon music under Aser Ali for seven years. Next he took training under Nafij Master for four years. Besides, Hamid collected Lalon songs from Buhari Shah, Panju Shah and Duddu Shah. He has collected about 800 Lalon songs and has composed around 70 songs. He is a member of the Baul Academy and Lalon Bhumi Theater in Jhenidah.
Hamid published his first album in January 2009 with the assistance of the Baul Academy of Harinakundo. The album is titled “Amon Samaj Kobe Srijon Hobey”.
Hamid performs Baul songs in Jhenidah, Kushtia, Meherpur and Chuadanga districts.
As Sayeed Abu Bakar, assistant professor of Government Lalon Shah College and researcher of Lalon Shah, notes, Hamid always attracts a large audience when he performs Lalon songs. Another Baul devotee Akbor Saijee, said that Hamid has high potential and will go on to be a reputed Baul singer.
Hamid told The Daily Star that he finds peace in Lalon Shah’s ideology. He will continue with Lalon songs and conduct research on Lalon in future. He added that Harinakundo is Lalon’ s birthplace and so he will try to preserve Lalon’s heritage by performing Lalon songs in every nook and corner of the country
