I am a Bengali who has been in the US for the past 40 years. My major contact with Bengal (mostly West and some East) is through the music of Rabindranath, Atulprasad, Rajanikanta, Dwijendralal Roy, and Nazrul Islam. Recently, there have been several Rabindrasangeet and other singers from Bangladesh who have raised my curiosity. They are- Papiya sarowar, Iffat Aara Dewan, Nilufar Yasmin, Kamal Mustafa, Miliya Ali (Currently my neighbor in the US), and Laisa Ahmed. They are as good as some of the best artists from Kolkata of present time. Unfortunately, we do not get much of their music (either in Kolkata or in the US). What we get instead is terrible performers like Kaderi Kibriya and Fahmida Navin (they should be banned from singing Rabindrasangeet).and over-commercialized Rezwana Chaudhuri. Why can’t we get some of the newer singers from Bangladesh and more of the above singers? In my mind, Papiya Sarowar ranks well up there with Ritu Guha, Rama Mandal, and Purba Dam, and Pramita Mullick- possibly the best female performers of the post-Suchitra Mitra and Kanika bandyopadhyay era. Keep up your good work.
