Shah Abdul Karim Loko Utshab 2010
|
In memory of legendary baul singer Shah Abdul Karim, a two-day music festival titled Shah Abdul Karim Utsab will be held at Derai upazila in Sunamganj district on March 5 and 6.
Baul Shah Abdul Karim has written and composed over 1600 songs which are organised in six books inclu-ding Aftab Sangeet, Gana Sangeet, Kalnir Dheu, Dhol-mela, Bhatir Chithi and Kalnir Kooley. Bangla Academy has translated ten of his songs into English language.
Shah Abdul Karim, the legend of Baul songs and a versatile genius, had all through lived a very simple life often faced with harsh reality. However, with the recent trend of popular ‘modern’ versions of his (and other) Baul songs in Bangladesh, he is now widely recognised and honoured by people, even by the younger generation who had never been ‘fans of traditional folk songs’. Though much belated, his contribution to Bengali Music has now been officially recognised by the state and its people.
His popular songs include ‘Jil mil jil mil kore’, ‘Bonde maya lagaise, Ashi bole gelo bondhu’, ‘Kano piritee barailarey bondhu’, ‘Gari cholena cholena’, ‘Ami koolhara kolonkini’, ‘Agey ki shundor din kataitham’, ‘Ami tomar koler gari’, ‘Shokhi kunjo shajao’, ‘Ailai ma ailai a’, ‘Boshonto batashey’ and ‘Krishno aila radhar kunje.
Born on February 15, 1916 in Ujan Dhol village, in Sunamganj district in Sylhet division, Shah Abdul Karim was an inhabitant from one of the remotest villages of Bangladesh. Growing up with poverty and hardship, he began to express his thoughts and emotions musically from a very early age. He died on September 12 in 2009.
